Team and roles
Your firm’s team and the roles people hold determine who can do what in Cedent. You can see your team in Settings → Team Members.
The two roles
Section titled “The two roles”- Attorney — full access: working matters, approving and sending drafts, approving billing, and changing firm settings.
- Paralegal — can work matters, use the chat, contribute facts, and prepare drafts, but the steps that send something out, file it, or commit billing are reserved for an attorney.
The dividing line is approval: paralegals do the gathering and preparing; attorneys do the approving. This is the same approval-gating that runs through the rest of Cedent. For the full breakdown, see Who can see what in your firm.
Seeing your team
Section titled “Seeing your team”The Team Members page lists everyone in your firm with their role and bar number, so you can see at a glance who has which access.
Adding people
Section titled “Adding people”Adding teammates and assigning their roles is handled when your firm is set up; self-serve invitations are on the way. If you need to add or change a team member in the meantime, the Cedent team can help.
Limiting matters to certain people
Section titled “Limiting matters to certain people”Roles set what someone can do; matter access sets which matters they can see. If you want some matters visible only to specific people, switch to team-restricted access in Settings → Firm Profile and add the right people to each matter. See Who can see what in your firm.
Common questions
Section titled “Common questions”Can a paralegal approve or send a draft? No. Paralegals prepare drafts; approving and sending is an attorney action.
How do I add a new paralegal or attorney right now? Team setup is handled with the Cedent team during onboarding, with self-serve invites coming. Reach out and they will get the person added with the right role.
