Syncing with your external calendar
Calendar sync keeps Cedent’s dates and the calendar you already live in from drifting apart. Once you’ve connected a calendar, this page explains exactly what happens for each setting — so nothing appears (or disappears) that you didn’t expect.
Choosing a sync direction
Section titled “Choosing a sync direction”The sync direction in Settings → Calendar Sync is the master switch. Everything else on this page only takes effect in the direction you’ve chosen:
- Push to calendar — Cedent’s deadlines and hearings appear in your connected calendar, alongside everything else you schedule.
- Pull from calendar — events from your calendar flow into Cedent, where they can be linked to the right matter.
- Bidirectional — both directions, kept in step: a change on either side is reflected on the other.
- Off — the calendar stays connected but nothing syncs.
You can change direction at any time. Turning a direction off cleans up after itself — for example, switching push off removes the Cedent events it had added to your calendar.
What Cedent puts on your calendar (push)
Section titled “What Cedent puts on your calendar (push)”With push (or bidirectional) on, Cedent adds the deadlines and hearings it tracks to your calendar, limited to the event types you enable. Each synced event carries its date, time, and — unless you’ve hidden them — its title and location.
Two privacy controls decide how much detail leaves Cedent:
- Show as busy — synced events show only your availability. Titles, locations, and matter details are dropped, so a shared or assistant-visible calendar shows when you’re occupied but never why. Turn this off and full details sync.
- Confidential matters — a matter marked confidential is always pushed with a generic title, never the client name, parties, or case number — even when Show as busy is off. Sealed matters can’t leak onto a calendar others can see.
If you later hide a matter (mark it confidential, turn on Show as busy, or turn sync off), Cedent updates or removes the events it already pushed, so the change you asked for actually reaches your calendar.
Keeping changes in step (bidirectional)
Section titled “Keeping changes in step (bidirectional)”With bidirectional sync, a reschedule or cancellation flows both ways:
- Move or cancel a Cedent deadline in Cedent, and your calendar updates to match.
- If a Cedent deadline is a shared firm deadline you only have view access to, editing your copy in the external calendar won’t override it — Cedent treats its own record as the source of truth and restores it. This keeps one person’s calendar edit from silently moving a deadline for the whole firm.
Cedent’s dates always win for the events it created; your everyday events are yours to manage.
External events becoming matter context (pull)
Section titled “External events becoming matter context (pull)”With pull (or bidirectional) on, events from your calendar flow into Cedent, and Cedent tries to match each one to a matter using the attendees and title. This is how a settlement conference or a client meeting you scheduled becomes part of the matter’s record — without you re-entering it.
- On the calendar, a matched event shows as a pending link — a dashed card marked Pending with the matter Cedent suggests. Confirm to link it, or dismiss it with Not a matter.
- The Review external events button on the calendar opens the full queue, where you can confirm suggestions in one click, link an event to a different matter, or clear ones that aren’t case-related.
- A confirmed event becomes read-only context on that matter — labeled External — not a Cedent deadline. It appears on the matter’s timeline and feeds its briefs, but Cedent treats it as reference, not a computed legal deadline, and never pushes it back out to your calendar. There’s no risk of an event echoing back and forth.
- Cedent won’t change an external event you confirmed — it’s a reference to what’s on your calendar, not a copy it manages.
Keeping personal events out
Section titled “Keeping personal events out”Not everything on your calendar belongs in Cedent. Under Ingestion opt-out, exclude events by attendee domain (so personal invites never come in) or by title keyword (dentist, gym, lunch). Excluded events are never pulled in and never matched to a matter.
Common questions
Section titled “Common questions”I turned on Show as busy but an old event still shows its title. Changing the setting updates events going forward and reconciles the ones already pushed. Give it a moment to sync; if a specific event looks wrong, re-saving the setting re-pushes your calendar to match.
A confirmed external event isn’t a real deadline — will it trigger reminders or deadline math? No. Confirmed external events are context only. They show on the matter and in briefs but never drive the statutory clock or reminders.
Cedent suggested the wrong matter for an external event. Use Link to a different matter in the review queue, or Not a matter to clear it. Only events Cedent is confident about show as a pending link on the calendar; the rest wait quietly in the queue.
Will connecting my calendar move events around? No. Cedent only adds its own deadlines and hearings (with push on) and reads your events (with pull on). It never edits or deletes events you created.
