Importing files from cloud links

Opposing counsel and clients often send files as cloud links — a Dropbox or Google Drive share, a OneDrive folder — rather than attachments. Cedent notices these links and offers to pull the files into the matter so they are read and searchable alongside everything else.

When an email on a matter contains a link to Dropbox, Google Drive, OneDrive, SharePoint, Box, or WeTransfer, Cedent gathers them into a Shared files card on the matter’s Overview. Each link shows where it points and a button to act on it.

For public Dropbox and Drive links, Cedent quietly checks that the link is reachable — you may briefly see Checking access… — and then offers to import. For links that need a sign-in, it says so instead.

  • Import — pull the file into the matter. Cedent downloads it and reads it just like an upload, so it lands in Documents and becomes searchable. The card then shows it as imported.
  • Open link — when a link needs a sign-in or cannot be imported, open it yourself in the browser.
  • Dismiss — clear a link you do not need from the card. This does not touch the email.
  • Public links (a shared Dropbox or Drive file) can be imported directly.
  • Sign-in links (many OneDrive and SharePoint shares) show Sign-in required — these need you to be signed in to that account, so you open them rather than importing.
  • Expiring links (such as WeTransfer) are time-limited by the sender, so open them promptly.

I imported a cloud file — where did it go? Into the matter’s Documents, read and searchable like any other document.

An import failed — can I try again? Yes. If a file could not be pulled in — it was moved, deleted, or briefly unreachable — the card offers a retry. If it keeps failing, open the link directly to check the file is still shared.
