Correcting an email's matter association
If an email ended up on the wrong matter, you can fix it from the inbox. You are always in control of where email lives, and a correction you make by hand is final — Cedent will not override it.
This page covers correcting an email that is already filed to a matter. To sort an email Cedent left unsorted, see The triage inbox.
Moving an email to a different matter
Section titled “Moving an email to a different matter”When you open a filed email, the matter it belongs to appears alongside it, with quick actions. To refile it:
- Choose Move matter.
- Search for and select the correct matter.
- Confirm.
The email moves to the matter you chose, and future messages on that thread follow it there. A confirmation lets you Undo right away if you picked the wrong one.
Moving is the right choice when an email genuinely belongs to a different case — it carries the email to its new home without sending it back through triage.
Removing an email from a matter
Section titled “Removing an email from a matter”To take an email off a matter entirely, choose Remove from matter. Cedent asks you to confirm and reminds you that future emails on this thread will return to triage. When you remove an email:
- It goes back to your triage inbox, where you can refile it.
- Cedent also cleans up what it derived from that email alone — any facts, draft, timeline entry, or imported document that came only from this message.
Because removing also clears the derived work, reach for Move rather than Remove whenever the email belongs on another matter. Remove is for email that should not be on a matter at all.
If other emails on the same thread still belong to the matter, the thread stays put for them — only the message you removed comes out.
Your correction sticks
Section titled “Your correction sticks”However you correct an association — moving an email, removing it, or filing one from triage — Cedent treats your choice as authoritative. It will not silently re-file it later, and it carries your decision forward to similar mail.
Common questions
Section titled “Common questions”Will moving an email lose any of Cedent’s work? No. Moving carries the email to the new matter. Removing is the action that clears derived facts and drafts — so if the email belongs on another case, move it rather than removing and re-filing.
I removed an email by mistake. It is back in your triage inbox. Re-file it to the matter from there; Cedent will re-read it and rebuild what it derived. Note that any draft you had already approved from it is not automatically restored.
What happens to the rest of the conversation when I move one email? Future messages on that thread follow the email to its new matter. Earlier messages already filed elsewhere stay where they are unless you move them too.
